What Happens to a 64-bit Application Installed into a 32-bit System?

What happens when a 64-bit application is fed unto a 32-bit operating system? I need some help in here. Most of the time, I got a pop-up notification when I am installing software to my laptop. It says that the software that I am about to install is intended to run on a 64-bit system but then I have a 32-bit operation. My question here is that have you ever been into this trouble and you disregarded the notification and continue the installation? What happened to the program afterwards? Did it successfully install into your system?
